I have recently discovered some new websites for writing competitions. The ones I’ve previously found have all been short story competitions for adults. However, these new ones include writing picture books and stories for preschool and primary school children which I thought might interest some of you.
The CYA Conference competition has 8 categories including picture book for preschool children, picture book for primary school children, non-fiction story for primary school children and illustrations for a picture book. Take a look at their website: http://www.cyaconference.com
It’s $16.50 to enter and you have to direct debit or paypal before you email your submission in. Also it’s due in on 30th April – so better get cracking! So, if you already have a story saved on your computer, give it the once over and email it in. The story can be longer than 500 words but they only want you to submit 500 words for the competition. Read the guidelines carefully though as they want it formatted a particular way and you lose points if it’s not done properly. The winner and shortlisted stories from each category will get sent to the publisher of their choice!!
I also found a writing competition on this website: http://www.writingclassesforkids.com
They have a competition every quarter. I missed the first one but the second one is due on 30th June so you’ve got a bit more time. The story has to follow the theme of belonging and displacement. You can write in any genre for this competition (except picture books). Entry is free. There’s also some rules for formatting the story with this comp. It’s all explained on the website.
Hope you enter your stories and good luck. You gotta be in it to win it!! If you come across any other writing competition websites please let me know!
Lastly, I saw on my facebook page that Kerry Argent, author and illustrator of One Woolly Wombat is visiting the Queensland Writers Centre, Level 2, State Library of QLD on Saturday 28th April. I’m not sure what time but will let you know when I find out. She is launching her new book The Fabulous Finola Fox. She also illustrated Wombat Divine by Mem Fox and Too Loud Lily by Sofie Laguna.
