Lost Dreams

Lily leaned against the Jacaranda tree and breathed in the sweet air.   When the band began to play she closed her eyes and as the haunting melody caressed her ears she gently swayed to and fro, reminiscing of her time on stage; the lights, the audience, the adrenalin rush as fingers and bow entwined, frantically sweeping backwards and forwards, faster and faster across the strings.

Lily screamed, her voice echoing in the surrounding darkness.   Clutching her disfigured hand she huddled beneath the tree, sobbing; for lost dreams and shattered hopes.

    • Thanks for your lovely comments Doug. That last line took me ages to get right! I had five different sentences and all of them were telling too much information. Once I cut out the words “horrific accident” it seemed to flow better.

  1. This is lovely, Rachel. The images you create of the Jacaranda tree, the sweet air and haunting melody call to the senses. The sad ending takes us by surprise – quite perfectly. The disfigured hand and lost memories pull at the heartstrings… Well done.

  3. So heartbreaking! I could feel her happiness building up and then suddenly breaking down all together as the music becomes unbearable to listen. Great job letting us connect with the character.
