Thanks to Rochelle Wisoff-Fields for hosting Friday Fictioneers. Here’s the interesting (and a little bit freaky) photo prompt for this week:
Here’s my story:
Sold!
The waiters buzzed around the art gallery serving champagne and canapes. Emma took a glass of bubbly from the tray and continued examining the exquisite paintings. Though masterpieces, she could still not comprehend how they sold for millions of dollars.
A strong force pulled Emma toward the back of the room. The unique reptile-like sculpture fascinated her, with its intricate patterns and twisty spiny tail. Emma watched the sculpture’s psychedelic swirling eyes with amazement, hypnotised by its power.
Suddenly her hand shot into the air.
“Five million dollars,” she heard herself say.
The hammer jolted her awake. “Sold!”
(98 words)
It is unbelievable how much some pieces of art go for. Think of all the amazing things which could be done with the money instead. Great representation of that world.

Dear Rachel,
I feel a major case of buyer’s remorse coming on for Emma. Cute story.

Thanks Rochelle. I wonder if she’s allowed to back out of it?

Aha! So that’s how they do it 🙂

That would certainly put a shock through your body! She probably couldn’t breathe after that. Amusing story.

Am I right in assuming this was a dream?

She was hypnotised by the sculpture’s eyes so she had no control over what she was doing. The sound of the hammer crashing down snapped her out of her hypnotic state.

I love how you moved Emma from not comprehending how much art pieces sold for to buying one for an outrageous price. Skillfully done.

I think I have overpaid once or twice. The soid term makes you think afterwards. Nice story

I have no idea what different paintings are worth. Never been to an art auction. What artworks have you purchased?

A couple of prints and a lovely terrifying Indian woman sculpture. I spent way too much on old silver coins. The idea of spending $160 on a dime happened once. Auctions are very similar, the clothing changes

Art is in the eye of the beholder, and impulsive shopping is never a great idea. Well written with a surprise ending

Hehe, now she knows. I think that art is worth the money… too bad that it is usually only acknowledged after the aritst is dead. This is unique, a fun take on the prompt.

I wouldn’t know what to bid if I was at an art auction but I guess if you love a particular piece of art then you are willing to bid a lot of money to own it.

Oh my…hope she is good for it.

I love art but I’ve always found the prices some pieces sell for to be quite mind-boggling! I wonder how many have been bought in an hypnotic trance like this one? Great story, Rachel. 🙂

It’s worth what someone is willing to pay. What will it be worth tomorrow? What someone is willing to accept?

omg, I love this story. Can’t figure out whether it was a dream or something she did in her sleep, but it made me chuckle 🙂
