2012 Book of the Year Award Winners

While at the library for Rhyme Time yesterday morning, I picked up a copy of  The 2012 Book of the Year Award Winners. Congratulations to all the fantastic authors and illustrators. They must be so pleased that all their hard work and effort has paid off.

There’s way too many to list them all but here’s a few favourites that the librarian and I liked:

Book of the Year:  Early Childhood

They Runaway Hug by Nick Blank, illustrated by Freya Blackwood (have put this one on reserve)

Honour Books:  Early Childhood

Come Down, Cat!  by Sonya Hartnett, illustrated by Lucia Masciullo (I really liked this story and the beautiful illustrations)

That’s Not a Daffodil!  by Elizabeth Honey  (put this on reserve too)

Book of the Year: Younger Readers

Crow Country by Kate Constable

Honour Books:  Younger Readers

Nanberry:  Black Brother White by Jackie French

The Truth about Verity Sparks by Susan Green

Picture Book of the Year

A Bus called Heaven by Bob Graham (on reserve!)

Honour Books: Picture Book of the Year

The Dream of the Thylacine – Ron Brooks, text by Margaret Wild

Flood – Bruce Whatley, text by Jackie French ( I was able to borrow this one)

“Flood” is the heart-rending story of the 2011 Brisbane floods.  The river rose up into the streets destroying houses, shops and even boardwalks.  Tens of thousands of strangers offered shelter, food and clothing.  They banded together to sandbag, clean roads and houses and provide fresh water and food.

Bruce Whatley’s emotional illustrations enhance the story.  He used acrylic wash with pencil on paper and painted vertically so that the paint ran, giving the effect of wetness.

On the back cover of the book I read that, “Profits from the sales of this book will be donated to the QLD Premier’s Disaster Relief Appeal.”

Until my next post I will look forward to receiving an email from the library saying that the other books have been returned.

Book Dates for your Diary

August is the month for reading loads of fabulous books!  On Saturday, the 11th August it is National Bookshop Day. I haven’t heard of it before but it’s a great idea to help support bookshops. If you’re out and about Saturday, visit your local bookshop and buy yourself or a friend or family member a favourite book.

August 18-24 is Book Week.  Here’s the Early Childhood Short List 2012:

Bland, Nick
Ill. Freya Blackwood
The Runaway Hug
Hartnett, Sonya
Ill. Lucia Masciullo
Come Down, Cat!
Honey, Elizabeth That’s Not a Daffodil!
Jorgensen, Norman
Ill. James Foley
The Last Viking
McKinlay, Meg
Ill. Leila Rudge

Last week during a library lesson, we read the story “Come Down, Cat!” by Sonya Hartnett.  The class and I loved it.  It is a beautiful story of friendship and bravery.  Nicholas is worried about his cat.  Night is falling and she is high up on the roof licking her paws.  How will he coax her into the safe, warm house? She doesn’t seem to want to come down, or does she?  The illustrations by Lucia Masciullo are beautiful and help make the story come alive.

Has anyone read any of the other books?  I’m looking forward  to reading some more next time I visit the library.

And last but not least – join in The Reading Hour – Saturday August 25th 6-7pm.

For a bit of fun – If you’ve got a photo of you or your kids reading, post it on the Kids Book Review facebook wall and you could win some books and most importantly – support The Reading Hour!
